About the Credit Card Payoff Calculator

Credit card debt is the most expensive common form of consumer debt — with APRs averaging 22–28% in 2025. At these rates, carrying a balance is financially devastating: every $1,000 in credit card debt costs $220–$280 per year in interest alone, and minimum payments are specifically designed to keep you in debt for decades.

The minimum payment trap: credit card minimum payments are typically 1–2% of the balance (or $25, whichever is greater). On a $5,000 balance at 22% APR: the minimum payment starts at about $100/month. Paying only minimums: the debt would take approximately 20+ years to pay off and cost $8,000+ in interest — $3,000 more than the original balance. Paying $300/month: paid off in 20 months with $883 in interest. The difference is staggering.

This happens because at 22% APR, monthly interest on a $5,000 balance is ~$92. If you're only paying $100/month, you're barely making a dent in the principal — only $8 goes toward reducing the balance.

Balance transfer strategy: if you have good credit (660+), a 0% intro APR balance transfer card (common offers: 15–21 months) can eliminate interest entirely during the promotional period. The typical transfer fee is 3–5% — worth paying if you'll pay off the debt during the 0% period. Important: don't use the old card for new purchases, and make sure to pay the transferred balance before the promotional period expires.

After payoff: once credit card debt is paid off, keep the cards open (closing them hurts your credit score by reducing available credit). Use them for regular purchases only if you pay the full balance every month — never carry a balance again.

Automated payments: set up autopay for at least the minimum payment so you never miss a payment (which triggers penalty APRs of 29.99% and late fees). Then make manual extra payments above the minimum each month.

    Formula Used
Monthly Interest = Balance × (APR ÷ 12) · Each payment reduces balance by (Payment − Monthly Interest)

Credit card interest compounds monthly. Minimum payments are typically 1–2% of your balance plus interest, designed to keep you in debt as long as possible. The only escape is paying more than the minimum. Even $50–$100 extra per month can cut years off your payoff timeline and save thousands in interest.

    Example Calculations

    $5,000 balance · 22% APR · $200/month

Paid off in 2.8 years · $1,700 in interest

    $12,000 balance · 24% APR · $400/month

Paid off in 3.7 years · $5,700 in interest

    $3,000 balance · 19.99% APR · goal: pay off in 18 months

    Need $190/month · saves $800 vs minimums
