    About the Crypto Profit & Loss Calculator

    Calculating cryptocurrency profit and loss (P&L) requires accounting for all costs involved in a trade: purchase price, sale price, transaction fees on both sides, and tax implications. Missing any of these makes your profit appear higher than it actually is.

    The basic P&L formula: Profit = (Sell Price × Number of Coins) − (Buy Price × Number of Coins) − Fees. ROI% = (Profit ÷ Total Cost) × 100. A 100% ROI means you doubled your money. A −50% ROI means you lost half.

    Exchange fees matter more than most traders realize. A 0.1% fee on both buy and sell (common on Binance) costs 0.2% round-trip. A 0.5% fee on each side (common on Coinbase) costs 1% round-trip. On a $10,000 trade, the difference is $20 vs $100 in fees — significant over many trades.

    US tax treatment: The IRS classifies cryptocurrency as property. This means every trade, sale, or crypto-to-crypto exchange is a taxable event. Short-term gains (assets held under 1 year) are taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate (10–37%). Long-term gains (held over 1 year) are taxed at preferential capital gains rates (0%, 15%, or 20% based on income). Receiving crypto as income (mining, staking, work payments) is taxed at ordinary income rates at fair market value when received.

    Tracking tools for crypto taxes: Koinly, CoinTracker, TaxBit, and CryptoTrader.Tax can automatically import your transaction history from major exchanges and generate tax reports. Manual tracking in a spreadsheet works for low-volume traders.

    Investment caution: Cryptocurrency is highly volatile. Bitcoin has experienced multiple 70–85% drawdowns from peak to trough. Never invest more than you can afford to lose entirely, and treat crypto as a high-risk allocation within a diversified portfolio.

    Formula Used
    Profit = (Sell Price × Coins) − (Buy Price × Coins) − Fees

    Total profit accounts for both buy-side and sell-side exchange fees, which reduce your effective profit. ROI = (Profit ÷ Total Cost) × 100. After-tax profit subtracts capital gains tax from the gross profit.

    Example Calculations

    $1,000 investment · BTC at $30K buy · $50K sell · 0.1% fees

    Profit = $664 · ROI = +66.4% · 1.67× multiplier

    $5,000 in ETH at $1,500 · Sell at $2,500 · 0.25% fees

    Profit = $3,310 · ROI = +66.2%

    $10,000 in altcoin at $1.00 · Sell at $0.30 (loss)

    Loss = −$7,000 · ROI = −70%
