Running pace is the foundation of effective training and race planning. Understanding the relationship between pace, speed, and finish time allows you to set realistic race goals, train at the right intensity, and track your progress over months of training.
Pace is expressed as time per unit of distance — minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer. Speed, the inverse, is expressed in miles per hour or kilometers per hour. Converting between them: speed (mph) = 60 ÷ pace (min/mile). A 10:00/mile pace = 6.0 mph. An 8:00/mile pace = 7.5 mph. A 6:00/mile pace = 10.0 mph.
Race pace projections: This calculator uses your recent race performance or training pace to project finish times across standard race distances (5K, 10K, half marathon, full marathon). The projections assume you've trained appropriately for the target distance — a 5K race pace extrapolated to a marathon will produce an overly optimistic estimate because longer distances require pacing adjustments.
The 80/20 training rule: elite and recreational runners who train most effectively spend roughly 80% of their training miles at easy, conversational pace and only 20% at harder effort. Many amateur runners do the opposite — running medium effort on most days — which leads to insufficient recovery, injury risk, and slower improvement.
Training zones for pace-based training: Easy (Zone 2): conversational pace, can speak full sentences. Threshold (Zone 4): comfortably hard, 4–8 miles sustainable. VO2 max (Zone 5): 2–8 minute intervals, very hard effort. Recovery: very easy, slower than easy. Your easy pace should feel embarrassingly slow — if it doesn't, you're probably running it too fast.
To improve your running pace: interval training (400m–1 mile repeats), tempo runs (20–40 min at threshold), and consistent weekly mileage increases of no more than 10% per week. Most runners see their biggest improvements in the first year through consistency alone.
Pace is expressed as minutes per mile or km. To convert: 1 mile = 1.60934 km. A 10-minute/mile pace = 6.2 mph = 9-minute/km pace.
5K in 25:00
Pace = 8:03/mile · 5:00/km · Speed = 7.5 mph
Half marathon in 2:00:00
Pace = 9:09/mile · 5:41/km · Speed = 6.6 mph
8:00/mile pace
5K = 24:51 · 10K = 49:42 · Half = 1:44:35 · Marathon = 3:29:10
