    Quick Tip Guide: 10% = basic service · 15% = standard · 18–20% = good service · 22–25% = excellent service

    About the Tip Calculator

Tipping is a standard part of dining and service culture in the United States and many other countries, but calculating the right amount quickly — especially when splitting a bill — can be harder than it looks. This tip calculator removes all the mental math.

Standard US tipping guidelines in 2025: Restaurants (sit-down): 18–22% for good service, 25%+ for exceptional. Bars: $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of tab. Food delivery: 15–20% of order total (not including delivery fee). Taxis and rideshares: 15–20%. Hair salons: 15–20% of service cost. Hotel housekeeping: $3–5 per night. Spa services (massage, facials): 15–20%.

If splitting among a group, this calculator divides both the bill and tip so everyone pays an equal share. You can customize the tip percentage to any amount — useful for rewarding excellent service or adjusting for service issues.

To calculate a tip mentally without a calculator: 10% is easy (move the decimal point one place left). Double it for 20%. Add half the 10% figure for 15%. Example: $47 bill → 10% is $4.70 → 20% is $9.40 → 15% is $7.05. That's all the mental math you need.

Pre-tax vs. post-tax tipping: Technically, you tip on the pre-tax amount since the service provider didn't set the tax rate. In practice, most people tip on the post-tax total shown on the bill, which is simpler and only slightly more (the difference on a $50 bill with 8% tax is about $0.50 in tip at 20%).

Tipping in digital tip screens: Many point-of-sale systems now show 25%, 30%, and 35% options by default as "suggested tips." You are not obligated to choose these presets — use the custom tip option for the percentage you've decided is appropriate.

    Formula Used
    Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100) | Total = Bill + Tip | Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People

    Standard tipping ranges: restaurants 15–20%, bar service 15–20%, delivery 15–20%, hair/beauty 15–20%, taxi 10–15%, hotel housekeeping $2–5/night.
