Gravel and landscaping material calculators prevent the expensive mistake of over-ordering (you pay for delivery of unused material) or under-ordering (multiple deliveries cost significantly more than one well-planned order). Getting an accurate cubic yard estimate before calling a landscape supplier can save hundreds of dollars on a typical residential project.
The calculation: volume (cubic yards) = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (inches) ÷ 12 ÷ 27. Always add 10% for settling, uneven terrain, and waste — gravel compacts after delivery and rain, and some always ends up off-target during spreading.
Material comparison: Crushed stone (pea gravel, #57 stone): heavy, 1.2–1.5 tons per cubic yard, excellent for driveways and drainage. Sand: similar density to gravel, ~1.35 tons per cubic yard, best for leveling under pavers and playground surfaces. Topsoil: ~1.0–1.1 tons per cubic yard, ideal for garden beds and lawn establishment. Mulch (wood chip): very light, ~0.4 tons per cubic yard, best for garden beds, paths, and playgrounds. Rubber mulch: even lighter, excellent for playgrounds, very long-lasting.
Delivery logistics: most bulk landscape material is delivered by dump truck. A standard truck carries 10–14 tons (~8–10 cubic yards of gravel). Minimum delivery charges apply regardless of quantity — usually 1 cubic yard minimum. For jobs under 2–3 cubic yards, pickup truck loads from a landscape supply yard may be cheaper than delivery minimums.
Drainage applications: #57 crushed stone (about 1.5-inch irregular chunks) is the industry standard for French drains and drainage channels because the irregular shape creates air pockets that allow water to flow freely. Smooth pea gravel is better for decorative paths. Fine limestone screenings compact tightly for stable walking surfaces but drain poorly — avoid for drainage applications.
Convert depth from inches to feet (÷12), then divide volume in cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards. Weight varies by material: gravel ~1.4 tons/cu yd, sand ~1.35, topsoil ~1.1, mulch ~0.4. Order 10% extra for settling and uneven terrain.
Driveway 100×12 ft · 4 inch gravel depth
14.8 cu yd · ~20.7 tons
Garden bed 20×10 ft · 3 inch topsoil
1.85 cu yd · ~2 tons
Playground 15×15 ft · 6 inch rubber mulch
3.47 cu yd · ~1.4 tons
