    About the Mulch Calculator

Mulch is one of the most beneficial and cost-effective investments in garden and landscape maintenance. A properly applied 3-inch layer of mulch retains moisture (reducing irrigation needs by 25–50%), suppresses weeds (significantly reducing maintenance time), regulates soil temperature, and improves soil health as organic mulches decompose.

The most common mulch measurement mistake: underordering. People visually underestimate how much depth is needed for effective weed suppression and often buy half the needed quantity. The recommended 3-inch depth requires significantly more material than a 1-inch visual top-dressing.

Mulch type guide: Shredded hardwood bark: long-lasting (3–4 years), dark, natural appearance, very common. Pine bark nuggets: coarser texture, good for slopes (less movement), lasts 3–5 years. Cedar mulch: natural insect-repellent properties, aromatic, long-lasting. Cocoa hull mulch: beautiful dark color and subtle chocolate scent, toxic to dogs — avoid if pets have access. Pine straw (pine needles): lightweight, acidic (good for acid-loving plants like blueberries, azaleas, rhododendrons), long-lasting. Rubber mulch: 25+ year lifespan, excellent for playgrounds, but doesn't improve soil.

Volcano mulching warning: piling mulch against tree trunks ("volcano mulching") is one of the most common and damaging landscaping mistakes. It creates moist conditions that promote rot, fungal disease, and pest infestation against the tree's bark. Keep mulch 2–3 inches away from all trunks and plant stems, creating a donut shape rather than a volcano.

Annual refresh vs. full replacement: rather than removing and replacing mulch each year, rake and fluff existing mulch to break up any compaction, then add 1–1.5 inches of fresh mulch on top. This is more economical and builds a beneficial decomposing layer.

    Formula Used
    Cubic Yards = (Length × Width × Depth in inches) ÷ 324

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. To convert: area (sq ft) × depth (inches) ÷ 12 = cubic feet, then ÷ 27 = cubic yards. Bags are sold by cubic feet (commonly 1.5, 2, or 3 cu ft). Bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard and is significantly cheaper per unit for areas over ~100 sq ft — typically 40–60% less than bagged.

    Example Calculations

    20×10 ft bed · 3" depth

16.7 cu ft · 0.62 cu yd · 9 bags (2 cu ft) or order 1 cu yd bulk

    50×20 ft area · 2" depth

167 cu ft · 6.2 cu yd · 84 bags or 7 cu yd bulk

    12×8 ft raised bed · 4" depth

    32 cu ft · 1.2 cu yd · 16 bags (2 cu ft)
